MY DEAR PROTEIN, the food source of my muscles.

To serious bodybuilders, choosing the right protein is key but to me, as long as the protein powder is high in protein, low in carbs and low in fat, I'm sold! Which brings me to the product I'll be reviewing today, MYPROTEIN's impact whey protein powders.

So I was browsing through mysale.my a few months back and came across this brand, MYPROTEIN and the protein powders were really cheap ranging from RM39 - RM49 per kilo, so I grabbed a few.

The flavors I end up with, in no particular order, are:

Chocolate Banana, 1 KG, RM49

Chocolate Brownie, 1KG, RM49

Blueberry Cheesecake, 1KG, RM49

Salted Caramel, 1KG, RM49

Vanilla, 1KG, RM49

Unflavored, 1KG, RM39

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

&

SHORT CONCLUSION

  • Except for "Unflavored", the other flavors smell AMAZING. Even my family agrees.

  • All of the powders don't mix well without a blender.

  • They all also taste artificially sweet when mixed with only water.

  • All of them taste best with MILK.

  • Most of the flavors don't taste good with plain yogurt.

  • The bag's seal is not working well at times. It won't seal perfectly leaving holes for air to seep into it.

  • Nutritional information is as shown below.

  • Flavor ranking from my most favorite to my least.

#1 BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE

#2 VANILLA

#3 CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

#4 CHOCOLATE BANANA

#5 SALTED CARAMEL

#6 UNFLAVORED

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS PROTEIN WHEY POWDER

So it's been about 3 weeks since I first tried this protein. My overall verdict? LOVE!!!!

OVERALL VERDICT >>>>>>> 5/5

I have included below the dates of the first time I tried the powders, the scent, texture, taste and how I use each and every one of these powders.

Jan 9, 2017: Chocolate Banana

DestapaBanana

Scent

Smells exactly like Chocolate & Banana. Banana scent is really strong in this one. Delicious!

Texture

When mixed with liquid, without a blender, it doesn't mix very well creating lumps. But mixes extremely well once blended.

Taste

- With water: Sweet but taste artificial.

- With milk: Creamy and tasty with sweetness that is just nice. Strong banana taste.

- With soy milk: Probably due to the added sugar content from the soy milk, the shake becomes very sweet.

- With Greek yogurt: The sourness from the yogurt helps balance out the artificial sweetness of the shake.

How I use this protein?

I love Bananas for breakfast so I consume this during breakfast normally as my protein intake in the morning. I also love this as my pre-workout protein shake to get me into the mood for workout.

Jan 10, 2017: Salted Caramel

335330-1-eng-GB_salted-caramel-cheesecake-470x540

Scent

Smells salty with a sweet scent of caramel. Doesn't smell as distinct as other flavors.

Texture

When mixed with liquid, doesn't mix very well with just a spoon, creating lumps. However, mixes extremely well with a hand blender.

Taste

- With water: Tastes very artificial and bland with 250ml of water.

- With milk: Creamy and tasty with sweetness and a hint of saltiness that is just the right amount.

- With soy milk: The added sugar content from the soy milk gives a nice sweetness to the shake.

- With Greek yogurt: Doesn't go well with yogurt. The tartness from the yogurt tasted weird with the salty caramel taste.

How I use this protein?

I love this as my pre-workout protein shake because I mix it with Coffee as a boost of energy to prepare me with enough stamina before going into workout overdrive!

Jan 10, 2017: Blueberry Cheesecake

Scent

O.M.G! This smells EXTREMELY DELISH! Even my family members kept mentioning how wonderful it smells. The smell is pretty strong that you can smell it from a distance away.

Texture

When mixed with liquid, doesn't mix very well with just a spoon, creating lumps. However, mixes extremely well with a hand blender.

Taste

- With water: Tastes creamy even when mixed with water.

- With milk: Super creamy and delicious. Sweetness is perfect.

- With soy milk: The added sugar content from the soy milk gives a nice sweetness to the shake but doesn't give as creamy a texture as when added to milk.

- With Greek yogurt: Not as nice as I thought it would be. It would be better without.

How I use this protein?

I love this at anytime of day! I drink it when I'm craving for SWEET desserts. It really helps with my sweet cravings.

Meringue-brownie-1120-x-1400_2b1ccdf4d73d5fd77ca4f7d70634ce9c

Scent

Smells exactly like Chocolate Brownies!

Texture

When mixed with liquid, doesn't mix very well with just a spoon, creating lumps. However, mixes extremely well with a hand blender.

Taste

- With water: Tastes like Vico. Mild chocolate drink.

- With milk: Creamy and delicious. Reminded me of canned MILO without the added sugar.

- With soy milk: The added sugar content from the soy milk make the shake becomes too sweet.

- With Greek yogurt: If you want to try chocolate yogurt, add this. Otherwise, don't.

How I use this protein?

This is also another way for me to feed my sweet cravings. I do make my 3-ingredient brownies when I'm feeling for desserts, but there are times when I'd want to indulge in a chocolatey madness and this protein powder fits right in.

I use this as a substitute for flour in my black beans chocolate brownie recipe. It tastes GREAT yet HEALTHY. Two words you'd want in a dessert! Refer below for this recipe.

My Chocolate Brownies Milkshake Recipe!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoon of chocolate powder (unsweetened)

  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder

  • 1 scoop of MYPROTEIN's Chocolate Brownies flavored powder

  • 1 tablespoon of Chia Seed

  • 150 ml full cream milk

  • 6 cubes of ice

My Protein-Packed Black Beans Chocolate Cookie Recipe!

Ingredients

  • 15-ounce can cooked black beans (or 1½ cups cooked)

  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter

  • 2 tablespoons milk (or almond milk)

  • ½ cup honey

  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder (unsweetened)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ¾ to 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1 scoop of MYPROTEIN's Chocolate Brownies flavored powder

Tools required

  • Hand mixer

  • Bowl

  • Baking sheet

  • Parchment Paper

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F.

  • Rinse the beans and drain them; save out 48 beans for decoration (3 per cookie - or omit this step if desired). In the bowl, add the remainder of the black beans, 2 tablespoons peanut butter, 2 tablespoons milk, and ½ cup honey. Blend until smooth.

  • Add 5 tablespoons cocoa powder, the protein powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon baking powder and ¾ to 1 teaspoon kosher salt to the bean mixture and blend until smooth and the batter resembles a thick mousse.

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spoon 16 evenly distributed dollops of batter. Bake for around 10 minutes (the cookies should still be a little soft when you remove them from the oven). Place the saved black beans on top. Set aside a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Jan 11, 2017: Vanilla

vanillapic

Scent

Smells like Vanilla beans which I love!

Texture

When mixed with liquid, doesn't mix very well with just a spoon, creating lumps. However, mixes extremely well with a hand blender.

Taste

- With water: Tastes quite artificial and bland when mixed with 250ml of water

- With milk: Creamy and tasty with sweetness that is just right. Screams VANILLA MILKSHAKE!

- With soy milk: The added sugar content from the soy milk gives a nice sweetness to the shake. Vanilla and Soymilk somehow works well together.

- With Greek yogurt: Tastes like Vanilla yogurt. Not my cup of tea.

How I use this protein?

This protein powder is so VERSATILE! You can drink it plain, which taste like Vanilla milkshake when combined with milk or you can combine it with anything you want to further enhance the flavor of your shake or incorporate it into any recipe.

I combine it with everything really especially my MATCHA powder to create a MATCHA milkshake! I also use it to make creamy coffee, chocolate or fruit flavored milkshakes according to my mood.

I also use this as a substitute for flour for baking. I've been making pancakes, waffles, crepes and the likes with this powder. It's consistency matches that of flour and works well with every recipe I've tried so far.

My Peanut Butter Cinnamon Banana Pancake Recipe!

** This recipe works for waffles and crepes as well with added water to give it that perfect consistency that it should have.

  • 1 tablespoon of honey (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ¾ to 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 2 scoops of MYPROTEIN's Vanilla flavored powder

Tools required

  • Hand mixer

  • Bowl

  • Frying pan/Waffle maker (non-stick)

Method

  • Slice the banana into thin pieces and put aside.

  • Melt the peanut butter and pour to the mixing bowl.

  • Then add milk, baking powder, salt and the protein powder. Blend until smooth.

  • Heat up the frying pan over medium heat and insert two tablespoons of the mixture while shaping it into pancakes.

  • Once the pancakes are golden brown, they are done and you can garnish them with sliced bananas, drizzles of honey and sprinkles of cinnamon to taste. ENJOY!

Jan 11, 2017: Unflavored

icing_sugar_16x9

Scent

Unscented.

Texture

When mixed with liquid, doesn't mix very well with just a spoon, creating lumps. However, mixes extremely well with a hand blender.

Taste

- With water: Doesn't taste like anything.

- With milk: Tastes like milk flavored milkshake. Plain milkshake?

- With soy milk: Ever tried soy milkshake before?

- With Greek yogurt: Urm, just no!

How I use this protein?

Like the Vanilla Protein Powder, this protein powder is also SUPER VERSATILE! It doesn't taste good plain BUT because it's plain, it goes well with EVERYTHING! If mixed with raw honey and other flavorings, this promises a great shake!

If I use Vanilla protein powder to create flavored milkshakes, then I use this mostly for baking and COOKING. Yerp, you read right. I cook with my unflavored protein powders. It sounded disgusting at first but once I tried it, I found that you can definitely incorporate this into your main dishes for a protein boost!

Check out this recipe I found online that I've tried and succeeded at!

Who says you can't eat meatballs when on a diet?

This is a great tasting protein powder that is versatile enough to be used in recipes of all sorts! The sweet flavored protein powders are great as a substitute for desserts while the unflavored one is great as a substitute for flour for baking and cooking purposes!

If I have one complaint, it would be for the powders to mix well with liquid without blenders. There's always that time when we don't have blenders in our possession like when we're travelling and such so it takes away from the experience when the mixture is not well mixed. But other than that, I have no other complaints.

I highly recommend this protein to those who'd like to have a boost of protein in their daily diet. I'll definitely be repurchasing this product!
